This is very true. I remember reading a study like this: I'll use my own non-scientific language to describe it but: a male 8 would sleep with a female 5, but the reverse wasn't true. In the study, the female 8 wouldn't even talk to the male 5. When the female 5 gets to be of marriage age, she is suddenly surprised no one wants her. Though she claims to want to "never settle", that's exactly what she does - but she does so with regret and resentment.

Women date (read: have sex with) 7-8's in their 20s, settle for a 5 in their 30's for marriage, and are pissed off about it. Guess who bears the brunt of this wrongheaded discontent?
Now who's ready for marriage??
